How to Continue the Pursuit of Your Dreams Despite the Unexpected

by Joyce Dunaway @DunawayJoyce

The Coronavirus has impacted our lives and rearranged our schedules. Your children might be home from school; your workplace may have shut down; your writing conference might have been cancelled; or you’re confined at home because of exposure or to safeguard your health.

In the midst of this chaos, how can you continue to pursue your dreams? As a writer your circumstances might give you more time to write or the demands of family might require more of your attention.

Following are some suggestions that might help you continue the pursuit of your dreams despite the unexpected:

STAY CALM

When you watch the news, does your stomach start to churn? Although we need to keep up-to-date on the facts, it’s not necessary to listen to all the commentaries. Glean what you need to protect yourself and your family and don’t focus on the panic and hysteria. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV)

ESTABLISH A NEW SCHEDULE

You may need to get up earlier to have time to write before your household becomes chaotic. If you have more time than usual, use it wisely.

SET BOUNDARIES

If your whole family is home, let them know you still need uninterrupted time to write. The age of your children will determine how long they will be able to go without talking to or seeing you. Maybe your spouse could engage them in games inside or outside.

ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO HELP

Even small children can accomplish household tasks—giving you more time to pursue your dream. Keep them informed on your progress so they’ll feel they’re helping you achieve your goal. You might want to promise them a treat if they pitch in

TRUST GOD

God knows what you need to accomplish the dreams He has placed in your heart. Trust His timing even if you have to abandon your project for awhile. We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV).
